Abstract
Sixteen cases of the postoperative cysts of the maxilla were studied. In addition to the four routine sinus films, multidirectional tomographies were done for each cases. The results of findings of these films were compared to the findings of surgeries. The location, number and bony destruction of the cysts were checked. The percentages of the matched X-Ray findings were as follows; 45% for the conventional sinus films and 80% for the multidirectional tomography.
The findings obtained by the multidirectional tomography contribute more for the diagnosis of the cysts in the following situations
1) Multicystic lesions.
2) Complex postoperative anatomy of the maxilla.
Marginal sclerosis of the cyst wall was seen in the majority of the cases. Histo- pathological studies of the bony cyst walls revealed reactive new bone formation and sclerotic fibrosis in 7 of the specimens obtained. It was suggested that these reactive bone changes at the bony cyst walls give rise to the characteristic marginal sclerosis of the cysts.
