Abstract
A case of midline granuloma of the nose was presented with summarized clinical and autopsy records. A special reference was paid to the otological manifestations related to the histological features of the temporal bone. Seventy eight cases in literature in addition to the present one were statistically reviewed in terms of some clinical symptoms. The proliferation of a non-specific inflammatory granulation tissue was found, in the tube, tympanum, epitympanum and in the half number of the mastoid air cells. The ear drum was deformed without perforation. A middle-grade degeneration of the sensory cells and the spiral ganglion cells was detected in the cochlea. A scanty hemorrhage was found in the peri- and endolymphatic spaces of the ampulla of the superior semicircular canal. A hearing loss was detected in a 30.4% of the cases, in which a perceptive one was found in 29.1 %. A hemorrhage from the ulcerated areas of the nasal cavity is almost always one of major symptoms of this disease. A subcutaneous hemorrhage, a hemoptea, a hematuria, or a gastrointestinal hemorrhage is often complained. An extensive hemorrhage as a cause of death is recognized in a 12.6 % of the patients. The inner ear hemorrhage as was seen in this case, however, has not yet been reported in literature.
