Abstract

In the past five years, from July 1971 to July 1976, total 872 ears had the ear surgery in Kitasato University Hospital. The most of all were the patient of the second and the third decades of the age. In the cases under 9 years old, there were a large number of male patient and most of these boys suffered from the cholesteatoma. Out of 872 ears, 25% were the cases with the cholesteatoma.
In regard to the result of the surgery, the cases with simple otitis media had the most excellent result. 75% of them had a desirable hearing improvement. Both the re-operation cases and the cholesteatoma cases showed the improvement in 52% of the cases. The result of the surgery in the cases with the adhesion of ear-drum was 26%.
The re-perforation of the ear-drum was observed in 7% of the all operated ear and 0.9% of the all complained the sensorineural hearing loss after surgery. A temporary facial paresis after surgery was observed in 0.7% of the cases.
Finally, some considerations on the operation techniques for middle ear surgery were discussed.
