Abstract
The head and neck region is a common location for schwannoma to occur. In the last 10 years, 18 cases of schwannoma of the head and neck were seen in Hokkaido University Hospital. The age of patients ranged from 14 to 70, 39.4 on average, and there was no sex predominance. In our study, the tumor was seen most often in the lateral neck. Painless mass was the chief complaint in more than half of patients. The nerve of origin could be detected in 8 cases, based on surgical findings and postoperative symptoms. Of these, 4 were found to have arisen from the vagal nerve. Cyst formation, which is often found in Antoni B type, is not an unusual feature of schwannoma. It was possible to detect these lesions in CT scan and echogram.
