Abstract
The authors reviewed 26 cases of non-epithelial malignant tumors (NEMT) and 8 cases of malignant melanomas (MM) arising in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus who were treated in ENT-clinic, Hokkaido University Hospital from 1977 to 1986. The clinical analysis of these patients are summarized as follows; 1. In NEMT-Group, malignant lymphoma were most numerous (58%) and was followed by rhabdomyosarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma. 2. As regards the location of the tumor, NEMT were seen in both nasal cavity and in paranasal sinuses but all of MM originated from the nasal cavity only. 3. Age distribution of patients demonstrates that MM occured in older age-group. Male was predominant in both groups. 4. Nasal obstruction and nosebleeds were chief complaints in MM whereas those in NEMT was various. 5. Despite a variety of treatment modalities, prognosis was invariably poor in both groups of patients.
