Post-intubation granulomas of the larynx treated at Miyazaki Medical College Hospital between 1981 and 1992 were studied. The average length of intubation for surgical operations and/or respiratory insufficiency was 42.4 hours. Twelve of the 16 patients were female. Six of the granulomas involved the right side of the larynx, four involved the left side, and six involved both sides. Granulomas were removed by laryngomicrosurgery using CO2 laser under general anesthesia in nine cases, and in five cases the lesions were also injected with steroid solution. All histological specimens revealed non-specific inflammatory granuloma. In three of the seven non-operated cases, the granuloma disappeared without special therapy.
