Abstract
Investigation was made in the position of the auricles relative to the face by examining 165 cases of male (from 16 to 20 years old) and 100 cases of female (from 15 to 38 years old) and by observing 100 photographs of the Japanese and 330 of Europeans.
The conclusion was as follows: 1) In the majority of living male and female, the upper end of the auricles (A) corresponds to the median point between the eyebrows and the lower end (B) to the lowest point of the nose; 2) In the photographs of the Japanese, cases in which (A) corresponds to the median point of the root of nose and (B) to the lowest point of the nose are most frequent; and 3) in most of the photographs of Europeans,(A) corresponds to the median point of the root of nose, and (B) to the middle point between the lowest point of the nose and the median point of the upper lip.
With the above-mentioned data, the positions of auricles relative to the face were classified as the upper position, the middle position and the lower position. The cases in which (A) is higher than the median point between the eyebrows and (B) is higher than the tip of the nose are classified as the upper position. The middle position stands for the cases in which (A) and (B) exist between the median point between the eyebrows and the lowest point of the nose. The term of lower position is applied to the cases in which (A) is lower than the median point of the root of nose and (B) is lower than the middle point between the lowest point of the nose and the median point of the upper lip.
Most cases of the living male and female come under the middle position of the classification, and in the observation of the photographs, the majority of the Japanese correspond to the middle position as in the case of the living examples, while most of the Europeans are classified as the lower position.
