Fifty-five patients (a total of 54 ears) with otosclerosis are reviewed. All patients underwent and operation during the period from January 1987 through June 1994. We investigated the successful rate of stapedectomy and the histological findings of the stapes. The successful rate for obtaining a hearing improvement was 94%. We recognized the lesions of otosclerosis in 23 cases at operation. Twenty-two cases (96%) out of 23 cases showed lesions involving the anterior portion of the oval window. A histological examinations of the footplates revealed 26 cases (58%) out of 45 cases to have otosclerosis.
