Abstract
Two hundreds and five cases of malignant tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses observed in Mie University Hospital in 20-year period were clinically investigated.
The results obtained are as follows;
1) Out of 205 tumors in this series, the majority (90.2 %) occurred in the maxillary antra and squamous cell carcinoma was by far the most common malignant tumor (80.2 %) found in the sinuses.
2) The peak incidence of age appeared in the 5th and 6th decades of life. Men were affected more frequently than women, in a ratio of 1, 53 : 1.
3) Swelling of the cheek was the most common and characteristic symptom in the maxillary neoplasm, but never seen in the other region.
4) The crude five-year survival rate of all cases was 30.9 %. The definite relationship was noticed between the histopathological diagnosis and prognosis, for the malignant tumors of epithelial origin showed better prognosis than those of the non-epithelial origin.
5) Clinical staging of maxillary cancer proposed by Dr. Sakai gave a good indication of prognosis. Our data were coincided with it in five-year survivals; Stage I-II: 66.7 %, Stage III:33.8 % and Stage IV : 5.6 % respectively.
6) For antral malignancies, the combined therapy of irradiation and surgery was the most effective and produced the best five-year survival rate of 36.1 %. But the arterial infusion of anti-neoplastic agents concomitantly with irradiation and antrotomy was not so efficacious as expected in this series.
