Abstract
Effects of histamine on middle ear ciliary activity of the guinea pig were studied by photoelectric method. Histamine at concentrations of between 10-8 M and 10-4 M caused a ciliostimulatory effect in a dose dependent manner at the proximal site to the tympanic orifice.
Ciliostimulatory effect of histamine (10-6 M) was not affected by diphenhydramine (10-6 M), but was reduced about 50% by cimetidine (10-6 M). Histamine seems to stimulate ciliary activity by combining with H2-receptor.
It was suggested that histamine couldn't induce otitis media with effusion by itself but that histamine plays an important role in removing the foreign bodies during the inflammation.
