Abstract
Only a few reports are available on the amount of antibiotic in the pathological tissue of patients with otitis media. In the present report, the concentration of cefazolin sodium (CEZ), a basic drug on the cephalosporin group was studied in the otitis media inflicted tissue of 50 ears of patients operated on for chronic otitis media.
Each patient received 2g of CEZ dissolved in 100ml of physiological saline solution by means of intravenous dripping delivered in 60 minutes, immediately after which the granulation in the antrum-epitympanum or on the remnant tympanic membrane was collected as the specimen for investigation. At the same time, venous blood and the temporal muscle fascia were collected as controls.
Analysis was made with the Disc method. The amount of CEZ detected in the granulation from the afflicted tissue was found to be more variable than the one in the venous blood or fascia. Moreover, it tended to be greater than the one detected in the fascia of the healthy tissue.
Taking the histopathological findings of the detected tissues into consideration, the amount of CEZ was found to be the largest in diffuse inflammation, followed by localized inflammation and then old lesion.
