Abstract
Teratoma of the nasopharynx is rare. A 4-year-old with a history of nasal stuffiness since the age of one month. Fiberscopic examination showed a large smooth mass occupying the nasopharygeal space. Impedance audiometry was B type on the right side and C type on the left side, and radiography of the nose demonstrated bilateral mucosal thickening of the maxillary sinuses. The tumor was pedunculated from the upper torus of the right eustachian tube. Surgical removal of the tumor was performed by a transpalatal approach. Histological examination showed sebaceous and sweat glands, adipose tissue, cartilage, and dermal stroma. The tumor was covered by a layer of stratified squamous epithelium with hair follicles. The pathological diagnosis was nasopharyngeal teratoma (dermoid). After surgery, nasal and paranasal abnormalities and left tubal dysfunction were reduced, but impedance audiometry remained B type and pure tone audiometry showed conductive hearing loss on the right. Inflationdeflation tests of the right ear showed normal tubal function. Right ossicular abnormalities are therefore suspected.
