Abstract
Lingual thyroids are fairly common among ectopic thyroids. However, carcinoma arising in a lingual thyroid appears to be extremely rare. In this paper, a case of follicular carcinoma of the lingual thyroid is reported, and the clinical and pathological features are reviewd.
34-year-old female, who had been treated for 3-years with gonadotropic hormone, developed bloody saliva and a mass at the base of the tongue.
Thyroid scintigraphy and histological examination led to a diagnosis of follicular carcinoma arising in a lingual thyroid. It was removed via lateral pharyngotomy. The patient continues to be well 2 years after operation.
