Abstract

We report here two cases of laryngitis due to varicella-zoster virus infection. The patients were a 68-year-old male and a 37-year-old male who both presented with pharyngeal pain. A white erosive lesion was noted on hemilateral side of the larynx, but no vocal cord paralysis was observed in either patient. Based on the unilaterality of the lesion, we made a diagnosis of herpes zoster of the larynx. Laryngitis was successfully treated using the administration of acyclovir. Histopathological examination suggested inflammation due to virus, and DNA in situ hybridization revealed varicella-zoster virus.
