Abstract
A case of accessory auricle on the neck is reported and the location, etiology, and histology of accessory auricles is discussed. The external ear is derived from the first and second branchial arches, but the precise embryology of the external ear is still controversial. A review of our case suggested the following: 1) an accessory auricle in the preauricular or the cheek region is derived from the first branchial arch; 2) an accessory auricle on the neck is probably derived from the second branchial arch; 3) it may be preferable to use the term accessory auricle rather than accessory tragus.
