Abstract

A statistical analysis was made on 4,246 patients who visited our clinic complaining of vertigo and dizziness from 1974 to 1988. The annual number of patients has been increasing, especially those over 70 years old and females. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and sudden deafness with vertigo were predominant in the patients in their 50s, and a marked increase was noted between their 30s and 40s during the recent 5 years. The number of patients with acoustic neurinoma was 67, with predominance in the age group of 50s and in females. Patients with Meniere's disease have not changed in number, but their percentage has decreased. Vestibular dysfunction due to otitis media has decreased to less than 1% of all peripheral vertiginous patients.
