Prognosis of Hypopharyngeal Carcinoma Treated with Combined Therapy

Abstract

Between November 1974 and May 1991, 36 patients with hypopharyngeal carcinoma were treated with various combined therapy and their results were analyzed. The survival rate (Kaplan-Meier method) of the entire group was 38% at 5 years. The local control by radiation alone was very poor except in a few cases. The survival rate of patients by the combined preoperative radiation and surgery was best, being 52% at 5 years.
