With the advent of broad-spectrum antibiotics, the incidence of acute mastoiditis has been markedly reduced. We report two cases of acute mastoiditis due to penicillin-resistant Streptococcus Pneumoniae infections.
The first case was a 1 year-old female, and the second case was a 7 month-old female. Bacteria cultured from both patients revealed the presence of penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, and both patients were treated with a mastoidectomy.
Since penicillin-resistant Streptococcus Pneumoniae was first recognized in 1967, the incidence of penicillin-resistant Streptococcus Pneumoniae infection has been increasing.
Penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae infection results from the inappropriate use of antibiotics, and thus it is crucial to treat it with an accurate and precise choice of antibiotics.
