Abstract
The essence, of coal petrology ought to be the morphology of microscopic elements of coal. The form of those elements varies according to the kind and part of the vegetable as their original substance and to their conditions at the time of their sedimenta-tion. The defference in original matters and conditions at the time of sedimentation causes difference in the properties of macerals and their mixtures, microlithotypes.
Based upon this notion, the reporter discusses the essential problems concerning the pre-sent stage of coal petrology, especially the defference between the National Committee and the Japanese Committee in the results as well as the processes of their work, and sets forth his position that basically he supports the orientation of the work being done by the Japa-nese Committee, chiefly because the National Committee takes too much interest in volatile matters and aims only at the coal distilation under the conditions limited within their spe-cific situations. While the reporter asserts that coal petrology should develop itself as a fundamental science of classification as against that of coalification, and as such should be made full use of in and for all the areas of coal science and coal utilization.
