In order to produce easily a highly pure benzol containing less than traces of organic sulfur compounds, it has been investigated to hydrodesulfurize benzol at atmospheric pressure over nickel type catalysts.
As the first step in the study, it has been attempted to desulfurize completely the benzol refined with sulfuric acid the contact method with metallic nickel, as the second step, crude benzol by the direct method over nickel sulfide catalyst which obtained by the further sulfurization of the above used nickel metal catalyst. From the results, it was found that the hydrodesulfurization over metallic nickel catalyst was effective in the optimum reaction co-nditions;the reaction temperature of 200°C, mixed gas (containing hydrogen) G.H.S.V.of 10 and benzol G.H.S.V.of 2, and that the refining over nickel sulfide catalyst was successful in reaction temperature of 450 to 480°C, hydrogen G.H.S.V.of 50 to 150 and benzol L.H.S.V.of less than 0.5.
Furthermore, the latter method was successfully applied to industrial crude benzol, and found to partially hydrogenate to olefines.
