Abstract

Resources, characteristics and uses of brown coal are reviewed.Resources of brown coal are predominant in Germany, north middle America, south east Australia (State of Victoria) etc.and occupy about 23% of world total coal resources.
Brown coal is considared as low quality coal because of its low heating value, high water and oxygen contents. But low cost and high chemical reactivity of brown coal present attractive applications at special conditions and regions.
Chemical and physical properties of brown coal are also described.
