Abstract
Two-step sulfuric acid hydrolysis process is typically used to determine the content of lignin and compositional sugars. Since further decomposition of monosaccharides cannot be avoided in the second hydrolysis step, it is important to quantify as many products as possible to modify the sugar contents correctly. For sugarcane bagasse, yield of monosaccharides and lignin counted for only 77% of its composition. Other than sugars, we detected acetic acid, furfural, 5-HMF and other 15 compounds using HPLC equipped with a Shodex SH1011 column. The six and seven of the 15 compounds could be derived from further decomposition of 5-HMF and furfural, respectively. Especially, 5-HMF was easy to be decomposed in the second hydrolysis condition.
