Amorphous polysaccharide esters were synthesized from konjac glucomannan and pullulan which are natural polysaccharides produced by konjac plant or fungus. Transparent films of these polysaccharide esters were prepared by solvent-casting method. Their optical properties were studied in terms of optical transmittance and birefringence in comparison with cellulose triacetate (CTA) which are industrially applied as optical film. Relationships between chemical structure of polysaccharide esters and their optical properties were investigated.
