Abstract

Global warming and depletion of fossil fuels are recently causing many problems. Under such a situation, a special attention has been paid to plant biomass for useful energy and chemicals. Therefore, in this study, phylogenic evolution and diversity of lignin in various biomass species in plant kingdom were first introduced so as to discuss topochemistry of lignin in plant cell walls such as chemical structure and distribution of lignin. In addition, chemical composition of various plant species on the earth were introduced to characterize taxonomically different biomass species. The lignocellulosics were then defined from a viewpoint of a role of lignin in plan kingdom.
