Abstract
Recently, many communities across the nation are implementing plans for developing a unique town by taking advantage of characteristics such as regional history, culture, and natural resources, and conducting various activities to energize their economy and society and to improve the lives of residents. This article makes a report from Shikoku on a case study in which the residents took initiatives in developing their community, and on an illumination plan promoted through restoration of nationally important cultural properties with a consideration for resident uses. These two model cases show us with some important factors that should be developed between residents and a local government. Illumination designing is one of such factors that require a long time to develop with understanding of both of the residents and a local government.
