We present a new LED lighting system using Ise Paper Stencils, which are a traditional handicraft in Mie prefecture, Japan, as lampshades and discuss their optical properties. Clear patterns in the Ise Paper Stencils can be observed by using blue and green lights as the exciting source. To determine why these colors of light are effective, we studied the optical characterization of the Japanese paper by tanning it. We found that in the case of tanned paper, a higher transmittance can be obtained when red light is illuminated while a higher absorbance can be obtained when green and blue lights are illuminated. Green and blue lights are therefore most suitable as the source of new LED lighting with Ise Paper Stencils lampshades.
