A novel rotating coil-shaped spiral gas-solid contacting device was proposed. A cold model of spiral structure was made by combining 180° elbows of half hexagonal shape using ID 24 mm transparent plastic tube. This model consisted of 5-cycle spiral was driven by a motor. Pressure drop during gas feed was measured using five types of spherical particles and one type of non-spherical pellet. The pressure drop was compared with that for vertical packed bed with the same diameter (24 mm). The height of the vertical packed bed that gave the same pressure drop as the spiral devise was defined as “equivalent bed height for pressure drop”. The equivalent bed height for pressure drop was lower than that expected from the total volume of solids in the spiral assuming straight packed bed. This result is attributable to the gas bypassing through the short-cut formed in the spiral. Influence of particle size and shape on pressure drop is discussed.
