Degradation behaviors of lignin-derived compounds in atmospheric pressure plasma were studied under dielectric barrier discharges for phenol, guaiacol, and syringol, the simplest monomers of p-hydroxyphenyl (H), guaiacyl (G), and syringyl (S) nuclei, respectively. Phenol tended to produce more char than the other two, while syringol produced less char and more gases, mainly H2 and CO. Adding H2 to carrier gas (Ar) hydrogenated unsaturated hydrocarbons in the product gas and suppressed char formation in all samples. These results indicate that plasma may be promising for clean gasification with suppressed coking.
