Abstract
This study investigates the evolving processes and the background of the Environmental Education in China. Environmental Education is an indispensable measure to improve the quality of the environment. In 1970s and 80s, educating environmental technicians and managers was the main target of the environmental education to tackle with environmental problems which needed urgent improvement. Today, to meet with a wide range of environmental issues, environmental education in China sets its focus on the education of citizens, especially students, and thus environmental education in schools is regarded to be the main target of the program. Since 1996 the Government of China has been promoting the "Green School" Project, which is a key project of environmental education in schools. Today around 16,000 schools are taking part in this project.
