Ideas to Promote Reliable Studies of Landscape Appreciation

Abstract

Landscapes are appraised through the individual landscape experiences. Then different preferences are obtained by the effects not only of the personal history but also of the different cultural backgrounds. Their effects must be cleared by the accumulation of the studies. To accumulate the results of studies, more reliable description will be required. Decreasing the ambiguity of the understanding of the landscape evaluation, the exact way of the presentation and the common languages will be needed like as the studies of another scientific fields, i.e. chemistry, physics, mathematics and so on. The ideas were considered from the view points of the explanation of the studies. They are 1. personality of respondents related to the landscape recognition, 2. accurate expression of inquiry, 3. color photographs of landscapes represented, 4. large scaled map of the site, 5. description of season and solar time of the day, 6. weather condition and temperature, insolation, wind, sound, odor, etc., 7. exact description of stimuli, 8. terse presentation of results related to the physical features and 9. consideration on the results according to the process of landscape appreciation.
