Abstract
Shen Yüeh (441-513), a high ranking government official and famous poet, not only lived in the suburbs himself but also discussed the theme of “the suburbs” as a dwelling space in his writings. This paper analyses his views on the suburbs through examining his “Chiao-chü fu (Poetic Essay on Living in the Suburbs)” and his other literary works. It is concluded that the suburbs, for him, constituted unique surroundings by their nature of providing a feeling of living in the mountains while still being part of urban life, as opposed to living in the countryside.
