Abstract

The research on community extension and young shoot production of Phragmites japonica Steud. becomes an important subject for future waterfront revegetation. Above ground culms were artificially flattened sideways “lodging treatment” in order to do community extension and young shoot production of the above-mentioned species in the present study. The results are summarized as follows; The elongation of the culm and development of the leaf were remarkable in the culms after lodging treatment. The culms fixed to each location by generating produced a large number of young shoots and adventitious roots from the node after lodging treatment. Especially, the growth after lodging treatment was vigorous on the culms which grew further than the central of the community at the margin of the community. The generated young shoots were cut off from the culms, and the young shoots were transplanted. These young shoots smoothly grew and were able to winter. From the above results, the lodging treatment for the culms growing at the community margin was guessed with the usefulness for community extension and young shoot production of Phragmites japonica.
