Abstract

The open spaces on university campuses are considered to have a role as places for rest and exchange among diverse people, including students, as well as for educational and research activities. In order to create a good campus environment, it is important to establish a master plan and design guidelines for campus development and utilization, which are based on a long-term perspective. This article introduces the initiatives implemented in the development of engineering facilities at the Osaka Public University Nakamozu Campus, gradually established based on landscape design guidelines formulated with the participation of students. Specifically, it organizes the implementation details at each stage, from proposal to planning, design, and construction, in chronological order, and reports on the role played by the landscape design guidelines in campus development. The roles played by the landscape design guidelines include: 1) serving as a guideline for temporary development, 2) improving the quality of the campus landscape through the introduction of specialized perspectives on plants and ecosystems, and 3) showing the emergence of student participation in maintenance and management.
