Abstract

This study seeks to clarify the current state and problems faced in providing and utilizing information resources, such as books and materials, for career education in the libraries and career centers of Japanese public high schools. A questionnaire survey of persons-in-charge of school libraries (some of whom also handle career guidance) was conducted. The results reveal that persons-in-charge of school libraries emphasize providing students with information that broadens perspectives on ways to learn and live and on society. On the other hand, career centers seek to differentiate their services by providing specific information primarily to students who have already decided on their career path. The results also reveal that many persons-in-charge of school libraries felt a sense of unease in providing career education support. These findings point to the need for valuable information resources in school libraries and career centers to be managed in such a way that they can be maximally utilized for the benefit of students.
