Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to discuss issues related to the development of an interdisciplinary approach in tourism research. Although various social sciences are undertaking tourism research, an interdisciplinary approach has not been realized as most of the social sciences concerned, except for economics or special areas of psychology, cannot utilize mathematical representation that are the sine qua non of an interdisciplinary approach. Tourism research should therefore aim at facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to it. Such a new method may be that of a tourismological theory as a meta theory, derived from a variety of individual theories in the related social sciences.
