Abstract
There is a movement to open lodgings(Shukubo) throughout Japan. The Japan Tourism Agency has also been promoting “Terahaku,” experience-based lodging content utilizing historical resources since 2020. Historically, Shukubo have provided lodging as part of religious activities, but it is assumed that a different management style is emerging. This study focuses on the characteristics and roles of new types of lodgings, focusing on the business entities and management form of lodgings, with attention to representative examples reported overseas by JNTO and the Japan Tourism Agency’s “Terahaku” project. As a result, it was confirmed that, just as it is well known that in modern hotel management, there is a functional differentiation between ownership and management/operation, in the case of lodgings, various external actors are participating, and a multilayered management structure and functional differentiation are taking place.
