Abstract
We visited Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Kathmandu, Nepal, as members of the JABTS International Committee which had donated an ultrasonography machine to TUTH. We report the present state of breast cancer in Nepal, and the views of citizens of Kathmandu about breast cancer, based on an interview with Miss Ashema, who is a Nepalese student in Japan. Even in TUTH, which is one of the top hospitals in Nepal, most cases of breast cancer are advanced at the time of discovery, and some patients do not come to TUTH even after being diagnosed. The interview clarified that there is no system of mass breast cancer examination set up by the Nepalese government, and that there is a lack of knowledge about breast cancer among Nepalese women. Therefore the Nepalese people need to be better informed about breast cancer in order to reduce the mortality due to the disease.
