Acute Care Surgery (ACS) is an evolving and attractive field, but challenges such as maintaining surgical skills and defining its role within hospitals remain. At our institution, ACS is positioned as a division of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery. We developed a hybrid system where Acute Care Surgeons and Gastrointestinal surgeons work closely together. This structure improves surgeon compensation, supports sustainable work schedules, and ensures both surgical quality and case volume. It also contributes to the training and recruitment of young doctors. This paper describes our ACS model and its benefits.
