Abstract
In this report we dealt with the result obtained from the experiments for establishing the successive rearing method of the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis WALKER.
The borers were reared on the artificial diet under aseptic condition and the experiments were designed to facilitate comparing the details of its growth and development between the inbreeding and rotational breeding.
The inbreeding of this borer resulted in the unfavorable effects on the larval growth, pupation, fecundity of the female and hatching of eggs in the second or third generation. The female moths of the fourth generation laid only few unfertilized eggs.
On the other hand in the rotational breeding the almost all vitalities of this borer were well maintained through successive 10 generations. Thus, it was concluded that the successive rearing of the rice stem borer could be possible by avoiding the bad effect of inbreeding, although more improvement of the diet might be necessary.
