The purpose of the present study is to clarify the recognition concerning the social environment and support for the frail elderly with medical care needs. The qualitative individual research was performed by semi-structured interview. The participants were 10 frail old individuals with medical care needs, and who had received a referral as a subjects from the Care Managers Council.
The results of investigation showed that recognition could be identified as 4 categories and 11 subcategories. The 4 categories were : “Limitations in walking to emergency public shelters, “Critical planning about emergency procedure,” “Reliability of qualified social support,” and “Difficulties in disconnection with neighbors’ support,” In conclusion, while they recognized the limitations of the physical environment, and they performed focusing conditions, they also gained confidence. Also, while the desire to be safe by resorting to others’ help was recognized, it was also clarified that such support from others is not dependable.
