Purpose: This study aimed to understand the managerial perceptions regarding human resource development of care workers in group homes (GH) for patients with dementia. Method: Semi-structured interviews with an approximate duration of 60 min were conducted to survey each participant.
Results: A total of 11 study participants with 1–21 years of managerial experience and certifications were surveyed. The study questions addressed the following six categories of managerial perceptions assessed based on interview results: i) the basis of living as care workers with an elderly person with dementia, ii) requirement of knowledge and skills in dementia care, iii) promotion of self-awareness and responsibility as a team working in small facilities, iv) organization of human resources and career progression paths of care workers in GH for patients with dementia, v) promotion of self-development and interpersonal exchange in care workers at small facilities, and vi) awareness and responsibility as managers of GH for patients with dementia.
Conclusion: Managerial perceptions regarding human resource development of care workers in group homes for patients with dementia were primarily focused with i) providing support to the life of the elderly with dementia, ii) requiring knowledge and skills as a specialized professional in dementia care, and iii) promoting self-awareness and responsibility as a team working in small facilities.
