Abstract

The purpose of this study was to clarify the actual situation and the impediment factors in information transmission by home helpers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine helpers engaging in visiting care. Interview contents were converted into data and analyzed utilizing a qualitative synthesis method (KJ method). As a result, the 237 data obtained from interviews were classified into six symbol marks. The helpers have “awareness of responsibility for information transmission” and make efforts to improve the situation “utilizing actual communication”and “rules in emergency”. On the other hand, they faced “difficulties in communication”. To solve these problems, helpers expected “collaboration between care givers to remove the anxieties concerning medical care” and desired to have “the confidence obtained by something other than experience”.

There are five impediment factors in information transmission by home helpers; they are not good at finding out problems; they have anxiety about medical treatment; it is difficult to respond to people with mental illness; information sharing of observation items can’t be shared between helpers; they are not good at expressing their thoughts. As a measure against that, it was suggested that visiting nurses provide knowledge for medical care and how to relate to the care recipient, make an index of observation items when caring for the care recipient, and encourage helpers to participate in the case study meeting.
