Abstract
The purpose of this study is to survey elementary, middle school, high school, and college students to understand the current status of payment methods and money management methods in each school type, and to obtain basic data for future practice of home economics education. A questionnaire survey was administered to elementary, middle school, high school, and college students in the Kinki region of Japan. Regarding payment methods, the rate of use increased with age for all types of payment. The same was true for payment at supermarkets and convenience stores. The rate of receiving allowance increased as the type of school went up, from elementary school to middle school and high school, but the manner in which the allowance was received varied. The question about asset formation was asked of high school and college students, and the results showed that their understanding and interest were very low. Inquiries were conducted targeting high school and college students regarding asset formation, the results, however, showed very low levels of understanding and interest. Considering the current curriculum for high school education, there is a need for lesson plans that can stimulate knowledge and understanding of financial product characteristics and asset formation. While striving for improvements in current teaching methods, it will be necessary to develop lessons that align with new learning materials.
