Abstract

In this paper, the estimation of surface force on a single screw ship having a flat bottom above a propeller is dealt with based mainly on the results of measurements on ships.
Surface force on a ship has a close relationship with the unsteady cavitation associated with the wake distribution.
According to this relation between cause and effect, in the first part of the paper, the estimation of the wake distribution in the early stage of ship design is discussed. Then, the estimation method of surface force taking account of characteristics of the wake distribution, is presented. Finally, examples for calculation of surface force by using the estimation method are shown.
As a conclusion, it may be said that a accurate surface force can be obtained from the estimation method of surface force dealt with, from a strength or vibration point of view.
