Objective
This study aimed to investigate changes in trauma care at a tertiary care center located in the Tama district of Tokyo to evaluate issues of trauma care in the area.
Methods
A retrospective observational study was conducted. The study included trauma patients admitted to the intensive care unit between 2010 and 2021. Patients’ characteristics, injuries, and invasive therapeutic procedures, such as surgery and arterial embolization, were obtained, and outcomes were assessed.
Results
A total of 7,264 patients were included. During the period, the proportion of elderly patients aged ≥ 65 years increased, whereas the number and proportion of major trauma patients with an injury severity score ≥ 16 decreased. A total of 2,257 procedures were performed. We found that the number of annual procedures decreased. The mortality rate for patients with a probability of survival (Ps) ≥ 0.5 was 2.4%, whereas the survival rate for those with a Ps < 0.5 was 0.6%, both of which remained unchanged.
Conclusions
The number of major trauma patients and invasive procedures decreased, but there was no worsening of outcomes. Trauma care for severe injuries decreased. Our findings suggest that it is critical to establish a regional trauma care system in the area to maintain the quality of trauma care.
