Trauma surgeons are dedicated to reducing preventable trauma deaths (PTD). Many instances of PTD involve pelvic fractures. Reducing the incidence of preventable pelvic fracture deaths (PPFD) is important to reducing PTD. While trauma incidents can occur anytime and anywhere, it is important for trauma facilities that treat severe trauma to adhere to standardized care protocols, ensuring patients receive optimal treatment regardless of circumstances. Initial treatment strategies for pelvic fractures include sheet wrapping/pelvic binder application, external fixation, transcatheter arterial embolization with interventional radiology, preperitoneal pelvic packing, resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta, and implementation of massive transfusion protocols. Herein, we present an organized framework of initial treatment strategies that aims to improve the efficacy of these procedures and establish a standardized protocol to minimize the occurrence of PPFD.
