The present author described what he thinks of current status and future directions of behavior analysis at the 20th anniversary of the Japanese Association for Behavior Analysis. First, recognizing that the main controlling variables of behavior had been found and the basic principles of behavior had been firmly established, he proposed two new areas of research for behavior analysis : comparative behavior analysis and human behavior analysis. Then, he pointed out that refinements of basic concepts such as operant and discriminative stimulus were needed in order to analyze complex behavior. Finally, he made some suggestions about how to promote research, practice, education, and dissemination of behavior analysis in Japan.
