Abstract

Informed consent and shared decision making are sometimes confused and misused in rehabilitation. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether informed consent and shared decision making were properly used in literature. A systematic review of the literature was conducted to collect data from studies including “informed consent” in their title published until October 31, 2014. We searched seven databases for some search terms related to informedconsent and rehabilitation. Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed whether definition of informed consent contained four essential elements of shared decision making. The assessments were done to count number of elements of shared decision making in the examined literature. Based on the criteria, we identified 65 papers, and nine papers were included in our final analysis. Of the nine, one paper contained all elements, two papers with the three elements, three paper with two elements, and three papers with one element. Authors who included informed consent in their consent in their title did not clearly distinguish the concepts of shared decision making from those of informed consent.
