This survey aimed to elucidate the relationship between an interest regarding food and nutrition education among mothers and their children’s health, diet, and lifestyle in order to obtain data that would be useful in the promotion of food and nutrition education at home and nursery schools. In July 2011, 606 mothers with children aged 3-6 years completed questionnaires regarding food and nutrition education and their children’s lifestyle.
Approximately 90% of the mothers had an interest in food and nutrition education. The following were considered to be important for food and nutrition education: “Experience the taste of a variety of foods”, “Eat three regular meals per day”, “Learn about the nutritional content of food”, and “Enjoy meals with friends and family”. In the group with little interest in food and nutrition education, the situation of the meal of children was inappropriate. Furthermore, children that their mothers had little interest in food and nutrition education had a little appetite.
The results of this study suggest that mothers’ interest in food and nutrition education influences their children’s diet, lifestyle, and health status and that this reflects in their child-rearing attitudes.
