Abstract
We studied the effects of polydextrose (PD) on fecal weight andgastrointestinal transit time by the Latinsquare method in a cross-over fasionusing 9 male beagle dogs. Animals were divided to 3 groups; control group (PD free), PD 2.5% group and PD 5.0% group and fed with each diet for 11 days withthe wash out period of 7 days . Body weight gain, food intake and water intakewere not affected by polydextrose ingestion. The fecal weight was increased significantly in PD 5.0% group in compared with that of the control group. Also, the hardness of feces was softer in the groups fed PD than in the control group. However, the gastrointestinal transit time was not affected significantly by PD ingestion. These results suggest that PD is one of the dietary fibers which improve on defecation and fecal status.
